Camping at Natchez Trace

Blog-Story Topic:

We went fishing on Saturday (Oct 22, 2011) at Natchez Trace State Park near Lexington, TN. and had a great time! I picked up Trey around 9am and then stopped by and got Sherman and little Sherman around 10. We took the Durango so we had plenty of room - we even took Trey's little 4-wheeler. He calls it his "bike". We got to the Pin Oak campground at around 12:30 and met up with Mom, Ruthie, Shelli, and Henry. Pop, Forrest, and Cash were out on the water when we got there, but they showed up around 45 minutes later. In the mean time, we went down to the play area and let the boys wade. Cash and Forrest joined us down there. Then we got the word that lunch was ready, so we headed back up to the campground.

Lunch was really great - lots to pick from. The campsite has a nice, big picnic table and we had plenty of room for everything and everyone. Skookie came down and joined us also - he was staying in the lodge. The boys rode around on the 4 wheeler while the grown-ups finished lunch.

A bit after lunch, Pop, Forrest, Trey and I drove around with the boat to the boat ramp and launched it. Dad gave me a crash course on his 30-horse motor he has on the boat (new since I last ran it) and then I ran it around to the dock by the campsite. It's nice and smooth, and surprisingly isn't too much power for that little boat!

Sherman and little Sherman met us at the dock and we loaded up the boys and their poles, put on some lures and headed out on the lake. It was just the Boyd's, Trey, and I as the boat will only hold 4. We found a couple of spots to fish, but I was pretty sure we weren't going to catch anything. The boys (especially Trey) were making so much racket in the boat that I'm sure the fish weren't anywhere close. They hung in there pretty well though - we were out there nearly two hours I think...I didn't pay attention to the time.

Once the sun started getting low, we headed back to the dock, tied up the boat for the night, and then hauled our gear back up to the campsite. We got back just as Forrest was getting the campfire going. We ate dinner (again, lots of goodies), and then sat around the campfire toasting marshmallows and cooking campfire cherry pies. We yapped away until nearly 9pm and then loaded everything back up into the Durango and headed back to Memphis.

It was a wonderful, albeit long, day. I got home a bit after midnight and slept great. I think we'll have to do it again soon! Here's a link to the pictures on the Photo Gallery.

This was a terrific weekend.  Think we should make it an annual event!
