A friend of mine (thanks, John!) linked to a thought-provoking post on Google Plus from Jeff Jarvis titled:
We're not going to have a jobless recovery. We're going to have a jobless future.
I found this post a compelling read, and aligns well with my (not nearly as well formed) thoughts about the state and future of the economy. Working in downtown Pittsburgh is an interesting view into an economy that was all but destroyed by the disappearance of jobs due to efficiencies and globalization. Just in the past few years are we seeing a resurgence, none of it aligned with Big Steel. It's services, technology, and primarily healthcare. Most of it is focused on knowledge workers.
Other industries and economies have experienced the same thing. Flint, MI and car building. Textiles across the nation. That's the way of the future I believe and this accelerating trend nationally will exacerbate the polarization of our society economically. This polarization and the ensuing fallout is another (and very scary) topic for the future.
